8. Enjoy a Peaceful Trip at Matiu Island

For nature enthusiasts looking for a solo getaway close to the city, Matiu Island or Somes Island in Wellington Harbour provides a powerful dose of wild New Zealand sceneries.

It was handled as an internment camp, quarantine station, and military base during the modern era until being changed over to New Zealand’s Department of Conservation as a nature preserve.

For both day-visitors and nighters, the island has a range of short hiking tracks up to its highest point. General regular ferries leave from Queens Wharf to the island, and a campsite provides overnighters.

10. Marvel at the Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria offers beautiful 360-degree views of Wellington City, the harbor, and the south’s ocean. 

Mount Victoria is a portion of the Wellington Town Belt, the area set apart in 1841 by the colonial New Zealand Company for a “public pleasure ground for Wellington residents.” It’s a great place for mountain biking, walking, and jogging.

11. Visit the Film Locations Around Wellington

On cloudless nights, you can see with the enormous telescope. Space Place is welcoming Tuesdays, Fridays, and weekends, and all week when school holidays.
